New York City-based progressive/instrumental metal trio PARAGNOSIS will release their eponymous second EP in June.
The term “paragnosis” means knowledge obtained from a higher power; in the eyes of this band, this power is music. Native New Yorkers Christian Realmuto and Moïse Scott started playing music together when they met in elementary school. Over the years the two stayed close, growing together through music. In 2012, Thomas Salyer moved to New York and met Realmuto at The New School For Jazz And Contemporary Music. The two connected quickly through their mutual love for both jazz and metal and the three musicians united under the PARAGNOSIS moniker in 2015.
Playing locally across the vast NYC metropolitan area, PARAGNOSIS has amassed a solid fanbase in the music community, having played notable venues such as The Knitting Factory, Webster Hall, and Saint Vitus Bar, opening for bands such as Binary Code, Oceans Of Slumber, and Added Color. In 2017, the band released their first EP, Clarity In Three, including the track “Hindsight,” the apex where the band realized their true calling was as an instrumental band. In 2018, PARAGNOSIS released the “Asthmatic” single which showed them honing the psychedelic, progressive sound they’re known for today.
After seeing the band perform live, Silver Cord Studio co-owner Jamie Uertz – who owns and operates the studio with Gojira’s Joe Duplantier – wanted to capture their live experience in the studio. The band recorded six songs live in the studio, which were produced, mixed, and mastered by Uertz, and will now see release as PARAGNOSIS’ eponymous EP, the package completed with cover art by Shane Harrington.
Since recording the Paragnosis EP, PARAGNOSIS returned to Silver Cord and played a live audio/video performance for the studio’s Silver Cord Sessions, which was produced by Duplantier.
Christian Realmuto reveals, “We met Jamie in 2019 after a show and he wanted us to come to his studio and record a record live as we do on stage. We didn’t know anything about the place, but once we heard the name Silver Cord, we were blown away since we’re all big Gojira fans. We were there for two days and essentially ran the record as a live set a few times until we were all happy with a take. A couple years later, Jamie asked us to come back and play while Joe listened through their new console. We ended up just running our newest material which eventually led to us doing the live session in January 2024.”
Watch for further previews of the record to drop over the weeks ahead.

"Hindsight" Review by Metal Sucks
Video Premiere: Paragnosis’ “Hindsight” Video Is Like The “Paranoid Android” Video But With More Eye Mutilation
In Matthew 18:9, it reads, “And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fires of Hell.”
Which makes you wonder just how much sin NYC-based instrumental prog metallers Paragnosis have seen. The band’s new video for “Hindsight”, a song from their upcoming album Clarity In Three, is chock-full of eye-plucking. But that’s not all–there’s also eye-eating, mauling, animal mutilation, and blind cults that worship plucked-out eyes to consider! All of this animated in a cool, down-to-earth doodle style a la Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” video, which somehow makes this all the grosser and creepier.
Does this sound unappetizing? Then don’t watch the video, but listen to the track! Paragnosis sound like a weird mixture of Mastodon, Animals As Leaders, Pelican, Tempel, and just a hint of Mutoid Man. Fans of any of those bands, and of heavy-hitting prog in general, will dig on hindsight even if they’re averse to cartoon gore.
MetalSucks is very pleased to premiere this sick tribute to eye mutilation. Watch “Hindsight” below. Paragnosis are playing at Dingbatz in Jersey tonight, and have a gig coming up at Lucky 13 on Friday, July 6th, so go check out the madness live, and keep up with them on their Facebook, Instagram, and/or Soundcloud pages. Clarity In Three drops August 31st.
